Driving

Posted in The Path with tags , , , , , on May 23, 2012 by bneal817

One of the ways many people encounter stress is behind the wheel – on the daily drive to and from work, or one of many important appointments. Many people get tense if the person in front is going slower than they want to go, many people panic if they are running late. I have seen otherwise calm and mellow personalities completely melt down in a traffic jam.

Why does driving have to be so upsetting?

Have you ever been on a long road trip? Not for business other plans, but just for the sheer pleasure of it – no tour guide, no itinerary, a real vacation. In such conditions, driving can be a real joy! With no schedule, no time you must arrive, it is easy to be laid back, to relax and enjoy the scenery rolling by. This is how we naturally experience life when we let go of our need to control, let go of our expectations, and drift aimlessly…

Your daily commute can be like that. I know you need to be at work on time, but you cannot control the traffic or foresee all of the possible delays you might encounter. All you can do is leave your house on time, and after that you are at the mercy of fate!

So relax, and be part of the flow. You don’t have to pass every slow moving car – even your best efforts will only get you there a few minutes sooner. Relax, and be aware. Awareness will transform even the most routine surroundings into a fascinating and wondrous landscape.

Delight in the sunlight gleaming on glass and chrome, and in the endless variety of paint colors and combinations. Notice the lawns, trees and flowers all around, the architecture of buildings and bridges. Be amazed at the wonder of the internal combustion engine, and at the vehicle that makes it possible for you to get from one side of town to the other in under an hour!

Now consider this…

When you first get in the car, and turn the key, and the engine turns and roars to life, would you say that “you” started the car? Or was it the battery, a spark, a chemical reaction that did it? Obviously “starting the car” is a process, a serious of events or reactions… but where does the process begin? Did you consciously will your hand and wrist to turn just so, or were you on autopilot? Maybe the process actually began back in the house, when you decided to go for a ride… or even before that?

It’s a bit hard to pin down…

But hey, the car started, it’s running fine. Now you’re cruising down the road and making good time. Maybe you’re listening to the radio, holding a conversation, drinking a latte… all the while you are steering, stopping, going again, and constantly making minute corrections to stay within your lane. Is there really a “you” that is deliberately doing all these things?

When you see brake lights flash ahead of you, your foot shifts from the gas pedal to the brake before you even have time to think – where is the “you” that willed your foot to move? Who or what stopped the car?

There is an endless chain of intricate electro-mechanical processes that keep your vehicle running, and they happen without your effort or control. The hundreds of other vehicles around you are totally beyond your control (tons of steel flying past you at high speeds, sometimes a foot or two away!). Even much of your own actions and reactions are not actually under your control. So when you arrive at your destination, and whether you arrive safely, is really out of your hands.

When you actually investigate what it is that “you” are doing, and what is happening of its own accord, you’ll find that the line is quite fuzzy – and ultimately it’s quite arbitrary. You will find that there is no distinct “you” who is driving, but rather a continuous flow; a process that goes on within you and all around you.

Trust this process. Forget your schedule, and your expectations – the process is always right on time. Relax, and drift along – it’s the Tao that gets you where you’re going…

Enjoy the ride!

A Warrior’s Song

Posted in Impermanence, Poetry, The Path with tags , , , , , on May 21, 2012 by bneal817

Have you ever stood beneath the stars

In silence, in solitude

Drinking in the mystery

And the loneliness of existence?

Have you ever been humbled

By the endless vastness of the universe

And keenly felt

Your insignificance?

Have you ever been face to face

With death?

Do you know in your bones

That the grave awaits?

That one day your name

And even your greatest deeds

Will be washed away without a trace?

Warrior – tomorrow is not guaranteed

Oblivion is all that’s sure

This moment just may be your last.

Waste not another second

Remembering the failures of your past!

Seize this day

And don’t ask why

This life was never yours to keep.

Embrace your fate

With head held high!

Stand at the edge of the great unknown…

And leap!

God is Not a Big Deal

Posted in The Path with tags , , , , , on May 15, 2012 by bneal817

The one constant theme of my blog – my poetry and all my writings – is spirituality. I am endlessly fascinated by the relationship of the human being to the Divine, and I get endless joy from sharing my insights and experiences with others who are on the Path.

For many (though certainly not all) spiritual aspirants this means the search for God. There are those who pursue a path of liberation that does not require any deity or idea of God – and in so doing away with this concept, many potential pitfalls are done away with, too. But there are many who feel a love and devotion which simply must be poured out upon the Most High, and this little treatise is written for such as these.

The trouble is, of course, that “God” is just another word, a concept that we bandy about without actually being able to properly define it. Whatever God is in reality we find to be quite elusive, ineffable, and impossible to pin down.

Furthermore, the seeking of God automatically sets up a situation in which “I” am most definitely separate from God. This can be quite exaggerated when we give free reign to our fancy. We imagine the Infinite Creator – eternal, perfect, omnipotent – as compared to ourselves – small, flawed, unworthy.

We imagine the state of mystic union to be a state beyond all pain and suffering, so utterly different from our present circumstances. We set up a shrine in our minds to this Divine Ideal of light without darkness, pleasure without pain – the highest of all expectations, the ultimate solution to all of life’s problems, the end of all of our doubts and fears and imperfections. We project onto God the ego’s desire for permanent security and ecstasy – like a great big everlasting orgasm.

But I am here to tell you - God is not such a big deal.

Actually, God is found all of the little things, so easily taken for granted: the sunrise in the morning, a gentle rain; a child’s laughter, a mother’s love; a warm embrace, a deep conversation; a deep breath, a moment of total relaxation; a soft and cuddly kitten, curled up in your lap…

And yes, God is found in your depression, your frustration; in anger, grief and loss; in all of your aches and pains; in illness and death. There is no pain without pleasure, no yin without yang. There is no experience to fear or avoid – all of life is but the fluid and endlessly varied manifestations of the nameless and formless One…

When on the spiritual path, there is a tendency of the seeker to turn away – to turn away from the world and from the senses, through a variety of austerities and so forth. To seek God in this way is like the eyes straining to turn around and see back into the brain, and it results in a frustrating cycle not unlike a dog chasing its own tail.

To find God is to stop searching. God is found, not by turning away from the world, but through surrender to it totally, and embracing it all as the manifestation of the Divine. God is found in rapt attention to life as it is – in a total absorption in the present moment in which both “God” and “I” are forgotten.

God is not an idea – something to be imagined, to be believed in or not believed in, something to be attained or realized after long years of study and practice… God is present and real, to be felt and experienced here and now, or not at all.

So do away with any fantastic concepts of the Cosmic Deity – these are more of a hindrance than anything else. If yours is the bhakti path of worship, love and adoration, then give your love and attention to what is right before you – to wherever it is needed in the present moment.

God is not fantastic and other-worldly, but rather the most mundane of all things – so easy to overlook precisely because it is so ever-present. In your boredom, your frustration, in your most private thoughts and fantasies, even in your darkest moments, God is there.

For God is your own precious self, with all your “imperfections” and peculiarities.

You are here, right now – the search is over.

Mother

Posted in Nature with tags , , , , , on May 13, 2012 by bneal817

Some thoughts to share on Mother’s Day, for every mother and every child, too…

I love you Mom!!!

I say these words with all my heart,

to the woman who gave birth to me,

who nursed me and raised me,

And who herself was once a girl

In my grandmother’s arms…

To the woman who has taught me

- and continues to teach me -

More than any other living being…

I say this too for every patient, wise and loving woman

I have ever known…

For every woman who has born, raised or cared for children,

And to all the young daughters who one day will…

I say this too for the Cosmic Mother I behold in all of them -

warm and bright as the morning sun,

soft and gentle as a summer breeze…

To the Goddess, Nature, indwelling all

Giving life to a hundred billion fertile spheres,

Nourishing all beings like suckling babes…

Who is every woman, every lover

Every mother, every daughter

And an ever present ebb and flow

of life and breath, birth and death…

The constant flux, the dance of form

by seasons tender and gentle,

fierce and terrible…

For her many moods and faces,

And for the many flavors of her Love,

I am eternally grateful.

I love you Mom.

Jagatambe Jai Jai Ma.

This Love

Posted in Poetry, The Path with tags , , , , on May 10, 2012 by bneal817

This light

Shining through me

Radiating endlessly

This Life

Living through me

All I have

All I need

This breath

Breathing through me

I am drifting, floating within

This Presence

Pure Being

All beings but waves within it

This moment

Effervescent

Shimmering, fluid stillness

Nothing else

Just this Love

Loving through me

Laughing, playing, dancing

On and on…

Come To Me Again

Posted in Poetry, The Path with tags , , , , on May 3, 2012 by bneal817

It happened again last night…

You came to me, suddenly, silently,

Not seen, but felt

Surging in like the tide,

Pulling me softly into you…

A living ocean

Pouring through me

Caressing every cell of my body

Like a million lover’s tongues…

You hum and all of Life takes up the tune,

You dance and the universe dances with you.

“What’s the name of this song?” I ask.

“Free will,” you reply.

You show me cosmic wonders, and beauty beyond description,

And say, “These are your own reflections.”

Then you show me all my deepest greed and shame,

Like a pit opening up beneath me, black and foul,

I feel my wings falter…

I panic – you laugh.

“Fall,” you say.

“There is nothing to fear.”

I plummet down into the howling depths of darkness,

And there you are!

Wearing a sly and wicked grin.

You are everywhere, both inside and outside,

My mind cannot contain it.

Like a chrysalis, I swell and burst –

And you emerge!

Beloved, I will never tire of this game!

Come to me again tonight –

You know the place where I will wait.

When the darkest hour of the night

Finds me alone and listening

To the yawing of the wind in the trees –

Come to me again.

Call me by my secret name,

The one that only lovers know.

Come to me again tonight,

Come, come again…
